What’s an eXp Sponsor Anyway?
At eXp, a sponsor is simply another active eXp agent. When you fill out your Independent Contractor Agreement, you name your sponsor. That person will get a slice of eXp’s commission split (not yours). They weren’t just picked to collect checks — they’re supposed to help support, guide, and influence the direction of YOUR growth.
Does Your Sponsor Need to Be Local?
Nope. One of the beautiful quirks of eXp is that your sponsor can be anywhere, as long as they’re licensed with eXp in your market. So don’t limit yourself to your ZIP code — pick someone with vision, systems, and experience, even if they’re in a different city (or country).
How Do You Get a Sponsor?
It’s on you to find one. From Word of mouth to Google. YouTube. TikTok. Social media. Engage. Ask agents what’s working for them. Give them a call. Make sure there is a chemistry between you two. Once you pick someone, you fill in their name on your eXp application. That’s it — done.
Do You Have to Pick a Sponsor?
Technically, no. You can let eXp be your sponsor — but you’re giving up something huge if you do. You lose the opportunity for mentorship, systems, partnerships, and momentum you’d get from a sponsor who’s active, invested, and skilled. in eXp we called in an orphan agent. you don’t want to be orphan, don’t you?
Can You Switch Sponsors Later?
Nope — once you choose, it’s locked in. The only way out is leaving eXp for 1 years. So don’t rush it. Do your homework now and make sure the your sponsor is a good fit for you and your business. This is your responsibility. My advice? relationship trumps. Do you want to be in each other life for a long period of time?
Why This Decision Really Matters
This isn’t just a name on a form; this is someone who can shape your trajectory in real estate:
- Do they have the resources you’re missing (marketing, lead gen, social media, systems, investing)?
- Can they fill gaps in your skillset or help you scale?

A sponsor is only required by the agreement to be someone who influenced your decision to join — anything extra (training, mentoring, strategy) is a bonus. That’s why it’s on you to vet and ask questions.
